What is the difference between an RECD and a dual fuel kit?

An RECD treats exhaust gases after combustion to reduce specified pollutants and particulate release. A dual fuel kit changes how the engine is fuelled by introducing an approved gaseous fuel alongside diesel. RECD primarily addresses exhaust treatment; dual fuel primarily addresses diesel substitution and operating economics. The correct option depends on the DG, location, operating profile and applicable requirements.

Can an RECD and a dual fuel system be installed on the same DG set?

It may be technically possible, but it should never be assumed. The engine, exhaust layout, gas system, controls, back-pressure limits and applicable approval conditions must be assessed together. Gyarash India recommends a project-specific engineering review before proposing a combined configuration.

Will either solution require replacing the existing generator?

Both solutions are designed as retrofit upgrades for suitable existing DG sets. The generator is normally retained, but its age, condition, capacity, engine configuration, exhaust routing and duty cycle must first be checked. A damaged, poorly maintained or incompatible DG may require corrective work before installation.

What is an RECD for a diesel generator?

A Retrofit Emission Control Device is an exhaust after-treatment system added to a suitable in-use diesel generator. Depending on the approved technology and configuration, it uses filtration and catalytic treatment to control particulate matter, visible smoke and specified harmful exhaust constituents before gases are released.

How does an RECD work?

The DG exhaust is routed through an engineered housing containing the relevant filtration and catalytic stages. Sensors or monitoring provisions help the operator observe system condition and exhaust restriction. The exact design, treatment stages and regeneration approach depend on the selected product and approved configuration.

Which DG capacities can be assessed for RECD installation?

Does RECD installation modify the DG engine?

The final layout must follow the approved product configuration and the DG manufacturer's technical limits.

Why are back pressure and monitoring important?

Any exhaust after-treatment device creates resistance that must remain within safe operating limits for the engine. Proper sizing, installation, monitoring and timely maintenance help prevent excessive restriction. What maintenance does an RECD require?

Is RECD installation mandatory for every DG set?

No single answer applies to every DG set in every location. Requirements can depend on the region, generator capacity, age, emission category, operating purpose and the latest direction from the relevant authority. Always confirm the current official order applicable to the project site before purchasing equipment.

What does “CPCB-approved RECD” mean?

It means the specific RECD technology or model has documentation issued under the applicable Central Pollution Control Board system or recognised testing and approval process. Buyers should verify the certificate holder, model, capacity scope, validity and any conditions—not rely only on a general marketing statement.

Which documents should a buyer request?

Ask for documents relevant to the exact product and project, which may include:

  • Model and DG-capacity compatibility information
  • Technical datasheet and installation drawing
  • Commissioning or handover records
  • Operating, maintenance and warranty terms
Does installing equipment automatically guarantee regulatory compliance?

No. Compliance can depend on correct product selection, valid documentation, approved installation, generator condition, operation, maintenance, testing and the latest local direction. Equipment installation is one part of an ongoing compliance process; the relevant authority's current requirements always prevail.

How does a dual fuel kit work on a diesel generator?

A dual fuel system introduces a controlled quantity of suitable gas into the combustion air while diesel continues to provide ignition. Sensors and an electronic controller adjust gas flow according to operating conditions. The exact substitution level changes with load, engine behaviour, gas quality and the selected configuration.

Which gaseous fuels can be used?

Depending on the kit and site assessment, potential fuels may include PNG, CNG or suitable biogas. Gas pressure, composition, calorific value, cleanliness, flow capacity, storage or pipeline arrangement and safety infrastructure must be checked before confirming feasibility.

How much diesel can a dual fuel kit save?

There is no responsible universal saving percentage. Actual substitution depends on DG loading, runtime, engine condition, gas quality and pressure, control calibration and operating discipline. A useful commercial proposal should use your measured load profile, diesel consumption and local gas cost rather than a headline percentage alone.

Does dual fuel work well when the DG runs at very low load?

Dual fuel economics are generally more attractive when a generator operates regularly under stable, meaningful load. Very low or highly variable loads may limit gas substitution and weaken the business case. Load information should therefore be reviewed before equipment selection.

What happens if the gas supply becomes unavailable?

A correctly engineered control system should manage unsafe or unsuitable operating conditions and allow the DG to continue in diesel-only mode where the selected system permits it. The exact fallback behaviour, alarms and interlocks must be confirmed from the proposed kit's technical documentation.

Will a dual fuel kit reduce generator output?

The objective is to maintain required generator performance while substituting part of the diesel with gas, but performance cannot be assumed for every engine and load condition. Commissioning should verify stable operation, acceptable temperatures, response to load changes and the safety-control functions.

What information is required for a quotation?

Share the DG make, engine model, rated kVA, manufacturing year, site address, photographs of the DG and exhaust area, operating hours, typical load and any available emission or fuel-consumption records. For dual fuel, include the proposed gas type, pressure and availability.

Is a site inspection always required?

Initial feasibility may be reviewed from accurate technical data, photographs and drawings. A physical site assessment may still be required before final engineering, especially where access, exhaust routing, structural support, ventilation, gas safety or space constraints could affect the installation.

How long does installation take?

The schedule depends on product availability, DG capacity, fabrication, exhaust layout, gas infrastructure, site access and shutdown permissions. What determines the cost of an RECD or dual fuel project?
